The outside gut...

Doesn't that fire damage just make you cringe?  I know I do every time I see this picture.

We really didn't want to gut all the original wood siding and decorative trim.  However, it was burned, rotting, and falling apart in so many places...that we made the decision to take it all off.  It was sad.  I took several pictures of all the little details that I hope we are able to replicate with the new siding and trim.

I really want to replace the 6" wide corner trim pieces, the corbels on the porch, and the decorative trim at the top of the corner trim pieces.  Plus, I'd like to add more corbels under the overhang...even though there weren't any there when we bought the house.  I saved a couple of the original corbels, so that I can use them inside the house someday.  Maybe on the island overhang?  The window trim will be much harder to duplicate without spending a fortune.  We will probably have to compromise and go with a crown molding trim instead.

This the back of the house.  Just in off that little porch is the kitchen, and above the kitchen is a bedroom.  And that long narrow section is a 7'x20' laundry room/mudroom.  I'm so excited about that!  I wish I would have had that when my kids were all little...but better late than never, right?!

The last picture of the original porch...

Notice that we added a new door where a window used to be, and a larger window on the second story.  That smaller window was in a bathroom, but just didn't look right on the outside.  By adding a larger window, it brings greater balance to the outside.

And a new side porch was added to the front.  We talked about connecting the 2 porches, but decided against it.  I wanted the smaller porch to be a main entry, more formal porch.  The side porch will be a more casual and entertaining area.  I thought about maybe screening it in someday?

This process of removing the old siding, adding new OSB, house wrap, and adding the porches all happened in only 3 days!  Can you believe it?!

Next up...the inside "before and after" fire pictures.  Stay tuned...

  1. another reason the Siding needed to come off was at some point in the houses history someone poured cement between the studs on the outside walls of the first floor. didn't think that had much insulation value and would definately be in the way when trying to rewire.
